About the project: The brief for this project was “Political Landscape”, a subject that could be explored in many ways. I chose to explore this theme from a historic angle, focusing on a turbulent time of the island of Guernsey’s past, the Second World War, and German Occupation.

Guernsey is dotted with old German fortifications built upon Hitler’s orders as part of the Atlantic Wall. The Atlantic Wall was a defense network that stretched across Europe, and I wanted to explore how Guernsey’s beautiful coastline is scarred by these ugly structures. I wanted to bring in the human side of the war and occupation and entwine this with my photographs of German Bunkers. I was fortunate enough to make contact with a number of elderly people who had lived through the war and occupation and were willing to tell their stories and be photographed. The Aim of my project became to bring together veteran images with physical landscape bunker images in an interesting and emotional way. I believe my images reflect the lasting physical and emotional impact that the second world war had on the beautiful island of Guernsey.
